Disney’s Hollywood Studios is undergoing some major changes right now, and with those changes come closures of attractions and restaurants. Pizza Planet closed in January and on April 3, 2016 Studio Catering Company will permanently close. It was originally said that Writer’s Stop would be closing as well but as Magical DIStractions team member Renee reported, it was removed from the chopping block and will have a revamped menu beginning April 3rd. Even with the closures there are still plenty of places to eat while in the park. Today I’m going to talk about one of them, ABC Commissary.
Located on the palm-tree lined Commissary Lane, ABC Commissary is the perfect spot for a lunch or dinner break – not only for the food but also because there is plenty of seating, meaning there are usually tables open. This counter service restaurant has an art deco-inspired design that “flows throughout the restaurant, from the floors and the walls to the menu boards.” (Excerpt from Walt Disney World website) On display are several props and items from various ABC shows including Modern Family, Revenge, and Extreme Makeover-Home Edition.
At the time of our visit, the menu included an Angus Cheeseburger topped with two fried shrimp with a side of fries. Each of those in my family chose the burger and one of their specialty cupcakes, the Frozen Ever After. My son does not like cheese nor sauces and was able to request that they be left off his burger. The burgers were nice and juicy and the shrimp were fried just right. The Frozen Ever After cupcake was a plain vanilla cupcake but it more than satisfied our sweet tooth. One of the others in our group ordered the New York Strip Steak and he was surprised at how good it was, as you don’t usually associate steak and quick service.
As with many of the counter service restaurant entrees, the size of the portions was large enough that some may choose to share. I certainly couldn’t eat all of mine and I should have shared with my daughter as she didn’t finish hers either.
ABC Commissary was also serving other specialties: the Darth Vader cupcake and The Bounty Chaser.
Some of the items that were on the menu at the time of our visit have been replaced but the Chicken Club, New York Strip Steak, Asian Salad and Angus Cheeseburger are still being served. When looking at the menu on the Walt Disney World website, it looks as though the couscous salad and roasted salmon have been removed and chicken breast nuggets have taken their place. Kids’ meals are also available.
Should you require gluten free, kosher or vegetarian options, ABC Commissary has those too. Simply let a Cast Member know and they’ll be more than happy to point those out to you.
The theming of ABC Commissary isn’t over the top but it does have just enough touches to make you feel as if you’ve strolled into a commissary on a studio set. The food? We enjoyed our burgers and, as I said, the portions were large enough to share so it would be a great budget-friendly option. We will be returning to Walt Disney World and plan to eat at ABC Commissary again on one of our two Disney’s Hollywood Studios days so I guess that means “Yes, we liked it and it’s worth returning for.”
