The holidays are a time for reflection and family traditions. One of my favorite family traditions is visiting the Bellingrath Gardens and Home Magic Christmas in Lights. With over 3 million lights, 1,100 set pieces, and 15 scenes, the Bellingrath Gardens Magic Christmas in Lights is one of the most beautiful displays in the country. Located in Theodore, Alabama (just outside of Mobile), this amazing holiday experience is a family tradition for many.
Bellingrath Gardens Magic Christmas in Lights
Bellingrath Gardens and Home is celebrating 22 years of Magic Christmas in Lights this season. Bellingrath’s Magic Christmas in Lights is nationally recognized as it made USA Today’s 2014 list of “10 Best Public Light Displays in America.”
This Gulf Coast holiday tradition is fun for the entire family. Leisurely stroll through the 65-acre Estate as you soak in all of the Christmas magic.
Operating Hours and Schedule
The Magic Christmas in Lights display will run through December 31, 2017, closing on Christmas Day. The display is open daily from 5:00-9:00 p.m. with tours of the Bellingrath Home every 30 minutes through 8:30 p.m.
Magic Christmas in Lights includes nightly choral performances by various musicians and choral groups along the Gulf Coast. Choral performances are held on the South Terrace of the Home on Sundays through Thursdays. The complete schedule can be found on their website.

Things to Know Before You Go
My family has been visiting the Bellingrath Gardens Magic Christmas in Lights as long as I can remember. Over the years I have picked up a few pointers:
- Weekends are crowded. If at all possible, visit during the week.
- The closer you get to Christmas Day the larger the crowds.
- Purchase your tickets online in advance so you don’t have to wait in the long ticket line.
- Wear comfortable shoes as this is a walking tour.
- Buy a set of 3D Holiday glasses to view the lights. The kids will love them!
- Purchase hot cocoa at the Live Oak Plaza.
- Use the restroom before you start the tour (make the kids go even if they say they don’t have to!)
- Don’t rush through the display. Take your time and soak it all in.
What are your holiday family traditions? If you are looking for a new one, I encourage you to visit the Bellingrath Gardens and Home Magic Christmas in Lights.
