According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Richard Petty Driving Experience and the Exotic Driving Experience at Walt Disney World Resort will close June 28, 2015 to “make way for transportation improvements.” Bill Scott, Executive Vice President of attractions with Petty Holdings LLC stated “Disney has other uses for the property and they have the right to do that, and we respect that. It’s not without some sadness that we leave Walt Disney World Speedway. We had a great home here.”
Disney has not released an official statement as to what transportation improvement project is requiring the closure of the Walt Disney World Speedway.
Approximately 70 employees were informed this afternoon they will be out of work this June. Some of the employees will have the opportunity to transfer to the Daytona International Speedway, which also has the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Disney has offered to try to find the other displaced workers jobs within the Walt Disney World Resort.
Guests have enjoyed the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Walt Disney World Speedway since it opened in 1997. Bill Scott says Petty Holdings wants to open a road course for another exotic car attraction in the Orlando area in the near future.
We will keep you updated as soon as news is officially released by Disney.
