We recently celebrated our twin daughters 14th birthday at the Walt Disney World Resort. The “icing on the cake” for our whirlwind birthday celebration was the custom birthday cake that I ordered as a surprise for them. Many people don’t know that you can order specialty cakes at any WDW Resort, so here’s the scoop!
We have never celebrated a birthday in Walt Disney World before, and we were sure surprised by the wonderful treatment that the girls received. It started at our breakfast at Chef Mickey’s with the Daily Celebration where the girls were each given a cupcake to partake in the Special Celebrations song. Then later in the day, a Cast Member at Gaston’s Tavern noticed their “Happy Birthday” pins and gave them each a beautiful Frozen themed cupcake.
If you are celebrating and have a dining reservation at any of the Walt Disney World Restaurants, they do have supermarket style cakes that are referred to as “Podium Cakes” on site. They are called this because you can basically walk up to the podium when you check in and request a cake. These cakes are 6 inches in size and are available in chocolate or vanilla buttercream, and cost approximately $23.00 (price subject to change).
If you are looking for something a little fancier, there are bakeries at the Contemporary Resort, Grand Floridian Resort and Boardwalk Inn Resort that will work with you to create exactly what you are looking for. These cakes can be delivered to your room (varies by resort location) or at a restaurant, or in some cases can be picked up by you. Cast Members will work with you to create exactly what you are looking for.
I contacted Private Dining at the Grand Floridian and explained what I was looking for. The Cast Member then emailed a rough price list of what was available:

So, I had a lot of decisions to make! My girls (I assure you they are twins even though they don’t like it!) have very different tastes, so I tried to keep it as neutral as possible. I found a pink ombre rose style cake online and emailed a picture of it to see if they would do something along those lines. The cast member assured me that would be no problem at all. The cake itself was chocolate with strawberry cream filling, with the ombre buttercream rosette icing. Finally I added 2 white chocolate Glass Slippers on top. In order to do this I needed to get an 8″ cake, which really ended up being way too much for us.
Distracted Tip: When ordering specify that you would like a box. We ended up having to search the next day for a box we could take the leftovers in.
When I placed the order, I let them know where we were staying and the time I wanted the cake to be delivered. I was a little nervous that it would get to us because the process was very easy, and since the cake was pre-ordered I didn’t even have a room number to give them, but at precisely 4 pm. there was a knock a the door!
The final product was absolutely beautiful and delicious. The girls were thrilled. It was so pretty they didn’t want to eat it!
