I grew up in a home where family game nights were a frequent occurence. I can recall many nights of sitting around the dining room table rolling dice, dealing cards, and moving game pieces while we munched on popcorn. There were fond memories of laughter and fun, and there were memories of when the competition got heated, and so did the “smack talk”. But, above all, there were memories made that will last a lifetime.
When I became a wife and mom, I couldn’t wait to pass on the tradition. My husband and I began collecting games from our very first year of marriage. In fact, our honeymoon was spent snowed in at a resort in Colorado, playing cards most of the week. As a family, we have accumulated a vast collection of the typical family card and board games over the years. We have created many memories of our own around our dining room table.
About eight years ago something changed for our family. We took our very first Walt Disney World vacation, and immediately became Disney fan(atic)s. All of a sudden, family game nights took on a completely different “flavor”. We now have an array of Disney themed games in our collection. We love to pull those out, and make new memories.
A way that we add a bit MORE magic to our game nights, and a wonderful everyday DIStracted Tip, is to use some of our old souvenir popcorn buckets from Walt Disney World, and drink from our resort mugs.
I thought I would share with you some of our family’s favorite Disney-themed games. So, grab some popcorn and gather at the table for some down home family fun, Disney style!
First up is Disney Cranium.
This game is just like the family edition of Cranium, but with a Disney theme. This is a team game with fun that includes sculpting, drawing, charades, trivia questions, puzzles and even a little “name that tune” with some of our favorite Disney songs. Warning: plenty of silliness will happen during this game.
Next in the line up is Disney Scene It.
Disney Scene It is an interactive DVD game. This game uses movie clips for puzzles and trivia. You’d better be quick with a remote control and quick with your verbal answers to win this one! Yes, dad has to give up the remote control for THIS game!
Our next family favorite, Disney Pictopia, was purchased using our Disney Movie Club rewards!
We love this game because not only does it test your knowledge of Disney characters, movies and television shows, but it also includes trivia from the Disney parks! This is a team game that also tests how well you know the folks you are playing with. Great fun!
For some reason, our kids REALLY love this next family favorite…
Hey, if nothing else this game keeps the siblings from picking on EACH OTHER, right? And, if you are wondering…yes, in most cases, our kids truly do Beat the Parents on this one.
We do not yet own the Disney version of the last game on our list. But we do have the standard version, and LOVE it. It is next on my “to purchase” list of Disney games we would like to have in our collection.
This is a classic. Each player wears a card with a picture of an object, person, or animal on it. You must guess what you have in your headband by asking questions to the other players. And, just to add to the excitement, there is a timer.
Those are our favorite Disney games, what are yours? We are always on the lookout for new ones. I would love for you to share some you may have that are not mentioned here in the comments below.
