It is official. The removal of Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ icon, Sorcerer Mickey’s Hat, will begin Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Walt Disney World announced the removal in October 2014. I don’t know about you, but this is incredibly sad news to me! So many memories over the years in front of this beloved hat! The trading pin store located inside the hat will be relocated to Sunset Ranch located on Sunset Boulevard.
The Sorcerer’s Hat debuted on September 28, 2001 as part of Disney’s 100 Years of Magic celebration, replacing the Earful Tower as the park’s icon. The celebration was focused on Disney’s MGM Studios (aka Disney’s Hollywood Studios) in celebration of the 100th birthday of Walt Disney. The Hat was inspired by the “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” segment in Walt Disney’s 1940 animated film Fantasia. The celebration ended in early 2003 and the Hat remained.
