One of the most memorable moments in the life of a baby or toddler is their first hair cut. Everyone has a different idea of the “right” time to cut their child’s hair, but almost every parent I know can tell you about the first haircut for their child. Or maybe the mom hasn’t had the child’s hair cut yet- because that would mean the child is growing up. I fell into that later category. I loved my firstborn’s sweet golden curls and I couldn’t stand the idea of snipping them away.
While researching for my family’s first trip in 2010, I stumbled across information about the Harmony Barber Shop at the Magic Kingdom Park. This fun little spot is often overlooked as people are drawn towards the center of the park ready to ride or watch attractions. Tucked around the corner from the Emporium, is a small shop with just a few chairs ready to give haircuts and a few special hair do’s. Don’t worry if you’ve never seen it before- many people don’t notice it.
As I researched, I found that they offered a special “First Haircut” package. This package included the haircut, a special certificate as well as the iconic Mouse Ears with “My First Haircut” embroidered on the back. With a 2 year old who had never had her hair cut, I knew that I needed to make a reservation. I called and scheduled an appointment for our very first day of our trip!

I talked to my daughter for weeks about getting her first haircut at Walt Disney World. She was so excited to get a new big girl haircut before she met the princesses. When we arrived at the Magic Kingdom, we made our way over to the Harmony Barber Shop, I couldn’t contain my excitement. We checked in and after a short wait my daughter was climbing up in the chair.
You could tell our stylist had worked with children for years, because he was able to work with my daughter’s ever moving body and gave her a toy to help keep her still. He listened as I explained what I wanted (keep the curls!) and even took the time to collect the hair he cut in a tissue a sealed it with a Mickey Sticker. Unfortunately, they were out of Mickey Ears when we were there, but they took our name and address and promised to mail them to us.
A few years later, it was little sister’s turn to have HER first haircut. She loved the experience JUST as much as her older sister! And they even gave my older daughter a new do with Pixie Dust in her hair! And who doesn’t love a little pixie dust?
The only downside to this experience? It takes a LOT of convincing to get my daughters to agree to a hair cut outside of Disney World! They seem to think they HAVE to go back to the Harmony Barber Shop.
