Changes are happening in Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Major changes! As we have been reporting, with those major changes come closures of both attractions and restaurants.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure is closing its gate at the end of the day on April 2, 2016 and I for one am a bit sad. Yes, I know that the last movie in the franchise was in 1994 but even kids who had no clue that the playground was based on the movies, had a great time climbing, sliding and exploring the larger than life play space. Had it been their decision, my kids would have played for hours if I didn’t encourage them to see other parts of the park.
“Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure invites you to discover the “enormous” world the Szalinkski children encountered. Featuring a menagerie of mammoth, backyard-themed set pieces and props inspired by the beloved film, the attraction promises humongous fun for your little ones.” (Excerpt from the Walt Disney World website)
When Guests stepped into Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure, they immediately knew what it looked and felt like to be the size of a bug. Thankfully, this shrinking process didn’t include any zapping from the Electromagic Shrink Ray, created by Professor Wayne Szalinski in the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
This 11,000 square foot play area, designed for kids preschool to grade school, was based on the Disney movie, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and the attention to detail was amazing! Even Anty the ant and Quark the dog made appearances in the playground. Kids and adults alike loved to pose on the back of the oversized ant for one of the most unique picture taking opportunities in the park. At the tip-top of the anthill, Guests would find Quark’s nose sniffing and snorting in his attempt to see what was going on in the “backyard”. Children could slide down 30 foot tall blades of grass or a roll of film as many times as their hearts desired and the giant ant hills, maze tunnels and spider webs were just waiting to be climbed and explored. Often you’d hear squeals of Guests when they were surprised by the drips of water coming from the leaky hose towering high above them.
Fun Facts about the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure:
- The playground opened December 17, 1990, almost a year after the release of the first movie
- The tallest blades of grass are 30 foot tall
- The leaking water hose is 52 foot long
- The spider webs are actually climbing ropes
- Quark the dog sprays mist during the warmer months
- If you listened closely, the ant actually chatters
I know that all good things must come to an end and it’s time to wrap up Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure and make way for new adventures. I’ll miss the playground but, I have the memories and I’ll make more memories with the new attractions to come. Did your kids spend time in the playground? Will you miss this attraction?
