A visit to Harmony Barber Shop is a cut above the rest, yet surprisingly, many are unaware that it even exists! When strolling into Magic Kingdom Park, it might be hard to spot the shop among the old-time storefronts of Main Street, U.S.A. Past City Hall and nestled to the left of The Emporium, look for the signature candy cane striped pole. Just like the rest of this “land,” when you step inside this small shop, you’ll be transformed into the nostalgic past of Walt Disney’s youth circa the early 1900s. You can almost imagine Norman Rockwell stationed in the corner, painting his next masterpiece. Even the cash register and telephone are era appropriate. As if we’d expect anything less when it comes to Disney.
Harmony Barber Shop was the first barber shop to open within a Disney Park. (The only other barber shop can be found at Disneyland Paris.) Originally located at West Center Street, a small shopping area that disappeared many years ago when The Emporium received an expansion, the barber shop was relocated to its current location. Earlier this year, it received a major refurbishment, moving the cashier station next to the entrance and providing more room for Guests awaiting their appointments. Rest assured, all the charm of its previous look still remains.
When we planned our daughter’s first trip to Magic Kingdom Park a few years ago, we knew her first haircut just had to happen at Harmony Barber Shop. For the rest of her life, when strolling down the street on the way toward Cinderella Castle, she’ll always know one of her big “firsts” happened on the West side of Main Street, U.S.A.
When she sat for the first big cut, the barber immediately put her at ease with her soft tone and seemingly endless supply of Mickey Mouse stickers. She sat perfectly still while the barber gave her a precise trim.
My husband and I acted like paparazzi, snapping shots of every snip as evident in the picture above. At the end of her haircut, our daughter was presented with Mickey Ears commemorating the big event!
In addition, we received a certificate and pouch with a locket of her hair. Those items went straight in her baby book as soon as we returned home. The First Haircut is just one of many amazing “firsts” possible at Walt Disney World Resort, and for us, it was a “mane” highlight of that vacation.
DIStracted Tip: Be sure to arrive for your appointment with clean, dry hair. Unlike salons at home, there is no hair washing here. Barbers may use spray bottles to dampen hair before performing a haircut.
During our recent trip to Magic Kingdom Park, we made a reservation for our daughter to have another trim. Like her first visit, the barber provided her with toys and stickers to pass the time as she worked her magic.
At the end of her terrific haircut, she even got a sprinkle (maybe more than a sprinkle) of Pixie Dust. Both children AND adults can ask for colored hair gel or pixie dust if so desired. A word of warning though; it can take more than one hair washing to remove said Pixie Dust.
As you can see in the picture above, no matter your age, there are a variety of services offered at Harmony Barber Shop. The prices are fair. For example, the cost of a child’s haircut is comparable to what I see back home. But barber shops and salons by me sure don’t offer that Disney charm. Plus, you might be lucky and have a visit by The Dapper Dans. They’re known for stopping by to perform a song or two to Guests.
DIStracted Tip: Tipping is encouraged and appreciated; however, tips can only be provided in cash.
