UPDATE: Since this announcement that have been some small clarifications. Many sources are saying that any resale contract that was sent to Disney Vacation Development, Inc. for Right of First Refusal (ROFR) prior to April 4, 2016 would be grandfathered in and still receive the Member Extras. Any resale contract that was not submitted to Disney by April 4, 2016 will fall under the new rules.
In 2011 Disney took away a handful of privileges to those purchasing Disney Vacation Club (DVC) points through resales. These privileges included not being able to use resale DVC points at the Disney Collection, Concierge Collection or the Adventurer Collection. That meant that Disney Vacation Club members couldn’t use their resale points to book a cruise on the Disney Cruise Line or use their points to stay at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel or Disneyland Hotel at Disneyland Resort.
Disney has made another BIG change to Disney Vacation Club Membership acquired through resale. Effective today, April 4, 2016, Members who purchase their points via resale will not be able to take advantage of the Member Extras. These extras include access to member exclusive events, such as the recent Disney Vacation Club 25 and Beyond Bash, and member discounts like dining or merchandise discounts.
All current Disney Vacation Club members should have received one of the new DVC Membership cards and according to all announcements and paperwork included with the new cards these will be the ONLY cards that will be accepted to prove you are a Disney Vacation Club Member starting this past Sunday, April 3, 2016. This implies that those that purchase DVC points via resale will possibly not getting a membership card at all.
Take note that current DVC Members, no matter how that membership was purchased, will continue to receive the Member Extras.
Does the loss of Member Extras change the way you view the value of purchasing Disney Vacation Club points via resale? Let me know your thoughts!
