On my recent trip to the Walt Disney World Resort, I was thrilled to be trying out the BoardWalk Inn for the very first time. I have stayed at practically every deluxe and moderate resort on Disney property and the BoardWalk Inn was one I had yet to experience. My sister and I checked in, thrilled to find that our on-line requests had been met. Near the lobby … check. High floor … check. Terrible smell … well, unfortunately that was NOT one of our requests. Our room had an extremely strong musty smell and we had to request a move. Due to on-going renovations, the resort did not have any other rooms available to us, but offered to move us to the other side of the resort, to The BoardWalk Villas.
I have to admit, I was disappointed. We were on this trip without our kids for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival and several MagicalDIStractions writers were staying at the BoardWalk Inn. The last thing I wanted was to move to the villas where more families and children would likely be vacationing. Skeptical about the room in the villas, we asked to view it before accepting. I had visions of having to move to another resort at 10:00 at night when we discovered we didn’t like the villas. Well, luckily my fears were unfounded. Catherine at the front desk was absolutely amazing and helpful, accompanying us to the villa, exchanging our keys and transferring our payments to the new room. Little did we know that she had handed us a heap of pixie dust!
Our one bedroom villa had been newly renovated, and I couldn’t help but envision bringing my family to stay in the BoardWalk Villas, as they are brilliantly set up for groups and families. Our one-bedroom villa featured a king-sized bed in the bedroom and a sofa sleeper in the living area along with a fully equipped kitchen, two balconies and a table with seating for four. The living room was comfortable and modern, updated to feature stylish floors resembling wood planks. The bathroom was amazing, with a sink, toilet and shower in one separate area and a whirlpool tub, dressing area and double sinks outside the main bathroom. The flat screen television in the bedroom was enormous and could even be seen from the whirlpool tub, an added bonus if you want to watch Stacey’s Disney Parks must-dos at the end of a long day of magical fun. The master closet was a walk-in and tucked away in the unit we found a high chair and Pack and Play just waiting for a Disney-loving child to use them! Although no one loves to do laundry on vacation, the unit’s stackable washer and dryer would be perfect for families planning on staying for more than a few days. Everything was spotless and newly renovated; even the hallway carpet had that newly installed smell.
DIStracted Tip: BoardWalk Villas are part of the Disney Vacation Club (DVC), but accommodations are often available as nightly rentals for non-DVC members. Check-in time is 4:00 pm and check-out is at 11:00 am. We did request a late check out due to a late flight, but they were unable to accommodate our request.
Another nice surprise about the villas is the proximity to the main feature pool, Luna Park Pool. Our room overlooked this circus-themed pool area and we could even glimpse the Tower of Terror from our balcony. Luckily we didn’t spend much time in the room during the day because pool games are in full force. Don’t get me wrong; this is a great feature of the resort. However, the Cast Member leading games by the pool spoke into a microphone all afternoon. When she wasn’t leading game, music was pumping constantly. This was fine for us, but for those with napping children, it may be less than ideal.
The location of both the BoardWalk Inn and BoardWalk Villas simply cannot be beat if you plan to spend time at Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Epcot. The BoardWalk itself is lively, bustling with shops, restaurants, carnival games and even entertainment. The resort is a mix of elegance and charm, and although it was not part of our original plan, our stay at the BoardWalk Villas turned out to be pretty magical.
