May the Fourth Be With You
Believed to be the first instance of its use, “May the fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.” was the congratulatory headline in 1979 for the newly installed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher. In subsequent years, Star Wars fans (like myself) have adopted May the Fourth (“May the Force”) as a day to celebrate all things Star Wars. Most recently, in 2015, astronauts on the International Space Station celebrated with an “out-of-this-world” viewing Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. While I think they could have chosen better content from the canon for their viewing pleasure, who I am to question rocket scientists?

Around the world, Star Wars nerds celebrate with marathon viewings of the films, costume contests, epic themed foods, fan created media, and the occasional Ewok dance party. (I may have made up that last one.)

Star Wars Weekends at the Rebel Hangar
At Walt Disney World Resort® in Florida and Disneyland® in California special merchandise, food items, and entertainment have been offered in past years. This year at Disneyland, Guests can enjoy a special screening of a fan-favorite episode of Star Wars Rebels. Special commemorative merchandise and “all-new Star Wars collector glasses” will be available for purchase, Guests can capture the moment at a “unique, themed photo location,” and party into the evening at the Galactic Grill celebration with trivia and “other special surprises.”
The Disney Floral and Gifts site, in partnership with Lucasfilm, is directing Guests to visit their site on May the fourth to learn more about an “interactive Star Wars Rebels role-playing experience” coming to Disney Parks and Resorts this summer.
How will our family celebrate? Of course, we’ll all be sporting our best Star Wars gear (yes, I’m breaking out my R2D2 dress by Her Universe) and we’re making special Star Wars themed cupcakes for my son’s preschool class.

Celebrating with Star Wars Cupcakes!
As the evening winds down, perhaps we’ll enjoy some blue milk while watching the latest installment in the franchise, The Force Awakens. God help my husband though, as Kylo Ren is our son’s favorite character in the canon.
So, get geeky with the rest of us and allow the Force to flow through you this May the 4th. But be sure to celebrate responsibly, or you may suffer the “Revenge of the Fifth!“
