Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida is not only a popular destination for visitors to its Theme Parks and Resorts, but also for cheerleading and dance teams from across the country. Chances are that you’ve seen the teams in their squad jackets or in custom team t-shirts on at least one of your vacations. Currently, there are competitions nearly every weekend from now through April on Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports schedule. Due to the popularity of Disney as a premiere venue for cheerleading and dance competitions, they have decided to construct a facility specifically designed for cheerleading and dance.
Last month, Disney submitted plans for a 286,000 square foot construction project. It has now been officially confirmed that the structure will be a cheerleading and dance competition venue. Disney is collaborating with the cheerleading organization Varsity Spirit to assist in designing the facility. Construction on the building will begin this month and is scheduled to open in mid 2017. The facility, which can seat 8,000 guests, will include one large competition space that can be divided into four separate, smaller areas. Plans also include areas for warm-up and practice. In addition to cheerleading and dance, the facility also holds enough space for six basketball courts, six volleyball courts, as well as concerts.
The Senior Vice President of ESPN Wide World of Sports, Maribeth Bisienere, said that the new venue “will be a model for cheerleading and dance competitions.” Currently, cheerleading and dance competitions are held in several different areas in the Wide World of Sports Complex and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park. I’m sure that competiton participants will be excited to have a facility dedicated specifically to their sport. “We value our young athletes, and want to give these incredible guests an experience that can only be achieved at Disney,” Bisienere added.
