Drop in for one last time
I must admit…my heart is breaking a bit. Since my first ride on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2002, I’ve been obsessed. A big part of that obsession is the old Hollywood theme. Two years after that, the Disneyland Resort announced its plan to build the Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure! Then I found out that they were having an opening event! I had to go! And go I did, celebrating the evening with drinks, the ride and some fun games.
In 2016. I learned that the Tower of Terror would receive a Guardians of the Galaxy overlay, replacing my beloved Old Hollywood theme. While I was so sad to hear, I was ecstatic to find out there was going to be a closing event! I grabbed my friend who attended the opening with me and we bought our tickets. The event was in the evening of January 1st.
An elegant farewell
Upon arrival, we were each given a voucher to buy a paperweight shaped like an old hotel key. The key was so nice and had the year on it. However, with a toddler at home, I knew that would get destroyed so fast. Once we got to the Tower of Terror area, we saw an awesome photo op with a Tower of Terror cut out. Turning the corner, there was a red carpet with people acting like 1939 paparazzi. That was so fun and made us feel famous. We made a beeline for the ride but I saw some desserts on fancy tables that was calling to me after we got off. They also had an emcee and the Silver Lake Sisters for entertainment. There were swing dancers and it really set the mood.
Soarin’ over dessert
When we were getting off the ride, our bellhop asked the elevator if we liked “traveling around the world” and we knew that meant that Soarin’ Around the World was open! We decided after checking out the merchandise (not much!), we would do the cut out photo op and then head on over to Soarin’. On the way to Soarin’, we stopped at the open bar to get water and soda and then I couldn’t help but eat a brownie and macaroon, I mean look at all that deliciousness! They also had an opera cake, chocolate covered strawberries and bananas fosters cheesecake.
After dessert and Soarin’ we decided to do the character photo op and then call it a night. We got an awesome picture with Bellhop Goofy! Bellhop Goofy rotated with Chip and Dale in bellhop hats so we didn’t get a picture with them.
While I’m sad the Old Hollywood theme is leaving, I was glad to have the opportunity to say goodbye. Now to plan a Walt Disney World trip to visit their Tower of Terror!
